Sony says PS5 shortages won't be a problem when GTA 6 launches — because the company locked down its memory supply ahead of time.
In its first-quarter earnings presentation, Sony confirmed it has "secured the quantity of memory necessary to meet our projected sales volume" for the fiscal year ending March 2027. In plain terms: there's enough RAM to keep making and shipping the consoles Sony expects to sell through GTA 6's launch window and beyond.
Why anyone was worried
The background is a real global crunch. AI data centers are buying up vast amounts of DRAM and high-bandwidth memory, driving prices up and squeezing everyone else — including console makers. Xbox has already raised hardware prices in some regions, and industry observers have spent months warning that console availability could become a bottleneck this holiday season.
GTA 6 is exactly the kind of release that could trigger one. Analysts expect millions of people to buy a PS5 just to play it, on top of the game's own record-breaking pre-orders. Sony itself says it expects the November 19 launch to create extra hardware demand.
What Sony is actually saying
The reassurance is specific. Sony said its memory procurement is on track despite the AI boom, that PS5 production is on schedule, and that hardware profitability should stay in line with last year. It acknowledged memory prices will keep climbing beyond this fiscal year, but for the period that matters — the one containing GTA 6 — it believes it has the parts it needs.
This is a meaningful answer to the question our earlier PS5 vs Xbox article raised: whether buyers should worry about grabbing a console before November. Sony's official position is now that stock should hold up.
There are a few caveats. Sony sold 1.6 million PS5s in the April–June quarter, down roughly a third year-over-year, and it quietly noted that at least one first-party game in the current fiscal year has been delayed — without saying which. And a promise about targets isn't a promise about every store shelf. But for anyone planning to buy a PS5 for GTA 6, the official line from Sony is: the supply is secured.
