GTA 6 Download Codes in Japan Expire 170 Days After Launch

Buy a boxed copy of GTA 6 in Japan, and you get a download code instead of a disc — but you have less than six months to actually use it. Rockstar's support page confirms that Japanese PS5 product codes expire 170 days after their issuance date, which falls on the game's launch day of November 19, 2026.

After that window closes, the code stops working. No redemption, no game.

Xbox codes are fine

The restriction only applies to the PlayStation 5 version sold in Japan. Xbox digital codes are not region-locked and are not subject to the same rules, so Series X owners have nothing to worry about. Rockstar says the policy exists because of regional regulations in Japan, and recommends that Japanese players buy from local retailers to avoid activation problems.

Why do the codes expire?

This isn't a Rockstar invention — it's tied to Japanese law. The country's Payment Services Act, enforced by the Financial Services Agency, requires companies that sell prepaid digital codes to reserve funds in case the business ever stops operating. Products with an expiry date of under six months are exempt from that requirement. Rockstar reportedly chose this route rather than joining the government-supported guarantee program that lets sellers skip expiration dates.

In practice, that means the codes expire, and the retailer (or Rockstar) doesn't have to hold funds for them indefinitely.

Why does this matter?

GTA 6 is the first major game to face this directly because it's download-only everywhere — there is no disc release at launch, so every "physical" edition is a code in a box. Japan is the only region where that code comes with a countdown attached.

Fans were quick to point out the irony: the same week the industry celebrates the "physical" edition as a compromise for people who want a box on their shelf, Rockstar confirms the box contains a code that goes dead in 170 days. "The future of gaming is looking like crap," one fan wrote on X. "This is why physical media matters," said another.

It's worth noting that GTA 6 can be pre-loaded from November 12, 2026 — a week before launch — so anyone redeeming on day one has plenty of time. The risk is for anyone who buys a Japanese boxed copy later, from a shelf or a reseller, long after the codes inside have quietly expired.
