No topic has gotten the GTA 6 community so riled up like frame rates. Will it hit 60 FPS or is this a 30 FPS job for consoles? The facts are all here.
What Rockstar Has Actually Confirmed
Absolutely nothing. They've provided no concrete details on GTA 6's frame rate from anywhere in the world at this point. That's the brutal but fair starting point for this.
The Leak That Kicked Off the Rage
To set this whole thing into motion, a Polish retailer listing for MediaMarkt surfaced just before the June 25 pre-order release. The listing highlighted two different graphics modes — Performance and Quality. Performance modes push for more frames per second; Quality modes prioritize visual clarity and detail. However, this listing made it no further, detailing no resolutions or frame rate targets.
So yeah, we are pretty much guaranteed two modes of graphics rendering. Which will give you better, faster and smoother graphics depends on what Rockstar actually delivers in each mode.
The Trailers Scream 30 FPS
The trailers for GTA 6 released so far rendered at a locked 30 FPS and showed a massive amount of ray-traced global illumination — from the tropical wetlands and the bright city streets of Leonida to the tropical beaches. Those are some really dense and lush environments. We are seeing the visual style Rockstar is actually aiming for here and not stretch goals.
That is quite a damning verdict because Digital Foundry — which provides some of the most accurate data regarding game performance — analyzed those trailers and stated that the game's launch frame rate is very likely to hit 30 FPS. This is apparently due to the huge load placed on console hardware for rendering open-world environments and complex lighting scenarios.
The Dream of 60 FPS
Even then, leaks and rumors continue to indicate 60 FPS is not an impossibility. The notoriously reliable leaker DetectiveSeeds — who accurately leaked info on DOOM: The Dark Ages and The Oblivion Remaster — shared a claim that GTA 6 can already hit 60 FPS on the PS5 Pro in various graphics settings, with Sony working closely with Rockstar in a dedicated effort to achieve it. We can't confirm any of these rumors currently.
The talk of a 40 FPS middle ground also persists as a very possible path between the more basic 30 FPS experience and the highly desirable 60 FPS.
The PS5 Pro Factor
Sony has confirmed that GTA 6 will support PS5 Pro Enhanced features, which clearly means the game will perform better on the Pro hardware than on a base PS5 and Xbox Series X console. Experts predict we will actually see the PS5 Pro receive a 60 FPS mode, while the standard PlayStation 5 remains on 30 FPS — this follows the trend established with Red Dead Redemption 2's patch that provided similar optimizations for the enhanced PS4 hardware.
The Verdict
Based on everything Rockstar has, and has not, said — along with rumors and analysis — expect 30 FPS for standard PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X when the game launches on November 19. If you have a PS5 Pro, you might have an opportunity to snag a 60 FPS experience, and it's possible there could be a Performance Mode with unspecified capabilities available. Beyond that, Rockstar isn't likely to comment further until much closer to the game's launch date.
