GTA 6 Pre-Orders Have Already Earned Over $260 Million — But Some Claims Are 'Incorrect and Absurd,' Analyst Says

We all knew GTA 6 was going to be big, but according to market research company Newzoo, it has already made over $260 million from pre-orders, reports Eurogamer.

That's a record-breaking sum, and it makes GTA 6 the most pre-ordered video game of all time.

But first, let's discuss lies

Newzoo has accused other outlets of spreading "false and absurd" information regarding the pre-orders of GTA 6, although they do not indicate what they believe to be false.

It's probably best not to take any particular figure as the truth, as there is a lot of conflicting information on the pre-orders of GTA 6. Some outlets report that GTA 6 sold out at retailers, while others cite the PlayStation Store, which lists the $100 Ultimate Edition outselling the $80 Standard edition. Newzoo's report indicates that the truth probably lies somewhere in between.

The truth is, the figure is still impressive

The figure of $260 million is undoubtedly impressive, and even if only half of the reported figures are accurate, it would still be a remarkable achievement for Take-Two.

It would be the most pre-ordered video game of all time, as most games rarely make more than $1 billion in revenue over their lifespan, and GTA 6 has yet to ship a single copy.

It also makes sense given the strength of the pre-orders in the PlayStation Store, where the $100 Ultimate Edition has been topping the charts, having outsold the standard edition by a considerable margin.

It shows the game industry is changing

If the $260 million figure holds up, it raises an obvious question: what does this mean for game pricing going forward? Take-Two's decision to price the Standard edition at $80 and the Ultimate at $100 was met with mixed reactions when it was announced, but it seems that gamers are willing to pay a hefty price for GTA 6.

Niko Partners director Daniel Ahmad noted that the trend of the gaming industry is to focus on getting existing customers to spend more money rather than acquire new ones. GTA 6's pre-orders are an example of that, and they suggest that gamers are willing to spend more money on the game.

GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, 2026, and until then, we will have to wait for the final figures. But if the trend of the last few months is any indication, Take-Two's decision to increase the price of GTA 6 will not be as unpopular as it seemed at first.
